Yecch! Intestinal Bacteria on Your Toothbrush (Sounds Like a Job for Colloidal Silver)

Yecch! Intestinal Bacteria on Your Toothbrush (Sounds Like a Job for Colloidal Silver)

A reader recently wrote that she was watching a doctor TV show and they tested all sorts of items that are usually found in a bathroom, such as toothbrushes, combs, hairbrushes, razors, towels, rags, shower caps, hair dryers, curling irons, drinking cups, etc.

Each common bathroom item tested was found to be loaded with disease-causing intestinal bacteria, such as e. coli and many other serious pathogens. The doctor said these pathogens can cause everything from minor skin rashes to serious intestinal illness.

He also said the bacterial contamination comes straight from the toilet. You see, during flushing many thousands of extremely fine droplets of toilet water are sprayed up into the air, traveling as much as 20 feet.

These fine droplets of toilet water can hover in the air for as long as two hours, eventually settling on all surfaces throughout the bathroom.

The doctor stated emphatically that the only way to help limit toilet water spray contaminated with intestinal bacteria from coating your bathroom is to shut the lid on the toilet before you flush.

A Problem You Might Never Have Considered

Of course, training the kids (or even hubby) to do put the lid down before flushing can be problematic. After all, it’s pretty much deeply ingrained in us to flush the toilet and stand there for a moment watching the toilet water swirl as your you-know-what disappears down the hole.

During potty training, you probably even trained your kids to stand there and watch as they flushed. You might have even patted them on the head and emphatically gushed “Good boy!” or “Good girl!” as they watched the toilet being flushed.

So putting the lid down before flushing is probably going to be a hard habit to break, even in grown adults, because of there’s often an underlying lifelong psychological fixation with watching the toilet flush after each use.

But clearly it’s a habit well worth breaking, especially considering this latest evidence that disease-causing intestinal germs, fecal pathogens and other nasty microbes are literally blanketing your bathroom every time the toilet is flushed with the lid still up.
Colloidal Silver to the Rescue!

This is one reason why I keep a small pump spray bottle full of colloidal silver in the cabinet under the sink.

Colloidal silver is a very powerful, all-natural liquid antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral agent that kills pathogens within moments of contact.

Unlike commercial antiseptic sprays for bathrooms and kitchens, colloidal silver contains no potentially harmful chemicals. You can spray it on all bathroom surfaces, including toilet seats, without fear of getting harsh and potentially harmful chemicals on yourself or your children’s skin when they later use the bathroom.

Colloidal silver is composed of tiny, microscopic particles of pure natural mineral silver in water. It cannot harm the skin, or any part of the body. In fact, silver is actually very good for the skin, and promotes skin healing, which is why most hospital burn units use a silver-based gel called Silvadene on serious burn victims. The silver in the gel promotes healing of the burnt skin from the moment it is applied, and stops the burnt flesh from becoming infected.

By filling a small pump spray bottle with safe, natural colloidal silver and lightly “misting” your bathroom surfaces, faucets, handles, towel racks, bath towels and rags, etc. with it, you can keep your bathroom and all of the items in it virtually pathogen-free all day long.

Spray Your Bathroom With Colloidal Silver

In fact, using a simple pump spray bottle from Wal-Mart, I lightly mist my toilet, sink, drain, and all bathroom contact surfaces daily with colloidal silver.

What’s really great about colloidal silver is that you can lightly spray toothbrushes, combs, hairbrushes or just about any common bathroom item with it, and the tiny silver particles in the fine mist from the pump spray bottle will quickly air dry on the items you’ve sprayed, and provide antimicrobial protection above and beyond what most any commercial antiseptic spray can provide.

Of course, you wouldn’t spray common bathroom items like toothbrushes or drinking cups with a commercial antiseptic spray, because those are items you’ll later be sticking into your mouth or drinking from. And you don’t want to end up ingesting potentially harmful chemicals.

But with colloidal silver, it’s perfectly safe to do so. In fact, I spray my toothbrush after every use, and most all of my bathroom implements such as razor blades, combs, hairbrushes, shower caps, drinking cups, etc.

Why Colloidal Silver?

Colloidal silver is actually a common all-natural liquid nutritional supplement found in just about every health food store in America.

Most experienced colloidal silver users drink it, either regularly, in small daily amounts, in order to prevent infections, or periodically, in slightly larger amounts, to cure active infections.

Because of its powerful antibiotic qualities, experienced colloidal silver users drink anywhere from a teaspoonful to an ounce a day, or even more during times of illness, because it is such a great internal infection-fighting and immune-boosting nutritional aid.

So spraying it on bathroom items such as a toothbrush that you’ll be putting into your mouth later won’t hurt at all. It will only keep the item as germ-free as possible – completely naturally!

Your Filthy Toothbrush and Colloidal Silver

I have often stated that next to the can opener in your kitchen, your toothbrush is one of the filthiest implements in your household.

After all, you put it into your mouth at least two or three times a day, and after each use you probably give it a cursory rinse and then let it set there in its holder all day breeding germs.

But for the past 13 years, I’ve sprayed my toothbrush with colloidal silver after each use, and just let it air dry. And I’ve never had to worry about my toothbrush being laden with nasty, disease-causing germs when I stick it in my mouth after each meal.

That’s because colloidal silver quickly and easily kills virtually all pathogenic microorganisms within moments after coming into contact with them. And it keeps working all day long.

I also spray my combs and brushes, and other bathroom items after each use. It’s quick and easy. And it works like a charm, keeping my bathroom items safe from disease-causing germs, yes, even if someone inadvertently flushes the toilet with the lid still up, releasing potentially dangerous pathogens from the toilet into the air in my bathroom.

Warts are considered non-cancerous skin growths – different strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV) cause warts to form on different areas of the body. Warts that form on the fingers are typically called “common” warts, while those that appear on the soles of the feet are called plantar warts.

About 70 precent of warts dissipate on their own within two years without any treatment, though in some cases, more warts can appear as the initial wart shrinks. Warts can spread by direct contact with scratches or cuts in the skin.

Corns are small collections of thickened skin, typically along the bottoms or sides of the feet – they are typically caused by excessive friction within footwear, usually due to aggressive athletic activity or footwear that doesn’t fit properly.

To treat common warts, plantar warts, and corns without acid, cryotherapy, or excision, all you need are fresh garlic cloves, a knife, and athletic tape.

Start by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water, and if you have any breaks in your skin, be sure to bandage them up to avoid direct contact with the wart.

Peel one clove of garlic, then cut it in half.

Use the cut side of one portion of garlic to gently rub the wart – the goal is to coat the entire wart with natural garlic juices. Do this for a minute or two, then use athletic tape to affix the remaining fresh garlic half against the wart – be sure to do this with the cut side of the garlic against the wart. You can cut and trim the garlic to cover the wart, but be sure that the portion of garlic that will remain in contact with the wart is a little larger than the wart itself to ensure contact if the garlic shifts.

You can apply this natural garlic treatment to warts and corns before going to bed, then remove it during the day to allow the area to breathe, and continue to reapply using fresh garlic each night.

For a small wart or corn, this garlic treatment will often lead to a complete cure within a week. For larger warts, you may need to continue with garlic application for a few weeks.

I just had a client use this garlic remedy for a large wart on his second toe. Within a few days, his wart shrunk by about half – as his wart shrivelled away, he could see blackening of the roots of the wart. Within a month of daily treatment, his toe was perfectly normal.

Garlic has long been known to have anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties. Koreans eat massive quantities of garlic through many of their staple dishes, kim chi being the most notable one, and epidemiologists in Korea have long believed that this partly explains their better-than-average record of immunity against various air-borne diseases.

A study in the International Journal of Dermatology (2005;44:612–5) confirms that garlic is a useful treatment for warts and corns.

If you give this remedy a try or know of another reliable natural treatment for warts and corns, please consider sharing via the comments section below. Thank you.

Please Note: Before trying this or any other natural remedy, it’s always prudent to run things by your personal physician.

HPV and Hepatitis B vaccines do not prevent cervical cancer and liver disease

by Michelle Goldstein

(NaturalNews) While pro-vaccinators continue to urge the use of vaccines to prevent disease, research does not support the theory that vaccines protect against illness. In fact, the HPV and Hepatitis B vaccines have proven to be dangerous and fatal to health. Hepatitis B vaccines, routinely given to infants at birth, are associated with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and other debilitating injuries. In the case of the HPV vaccine, early evidence is pointing to HPV vaccines actually increasing young women’s risk of cervical cancers, long associated with older women and safely screened by pap smear exams. The number of serious injuries associated with the newer HPV vaccine continues to climb.

The evidence against Hepatitis B, HPV and other vaccines

Vaccines in general have been shown to increase antibodies for a particular disease, while severely compromising cellular immunity, which is considered more important by medical experts in fighting disease. Prominent neurologist Russell Blaylock has written extensively regarding compromised cellular immunity and serious brain injury resulting from vaccinations. There is no evidence that vaccines work to prevent disease. To the contrary, several disease outbreaks, in population groups who are heavily vaccinated, have shown vaccines are ineffective in protecting against illness. These outbreaks include pertussis (whooping cough), measles and chickenpox. Research has shown that between 90- 99 percent of those vaccinated against these diseases have contracted them, compared to 1-10 percent of those not vaccinated for these diseases.

Hepatitis B is a disease most common in young adults who are sexually promiscuous or share drug needles. Hepatitis B generally resolves on its own and rarely develops into liver disease. Likewise, the HPV virus is not generally associated with cervical cancer, but usually presents as a benign illness which heals itself. Cervical cancer can safely be screened by pap smears and is typically diagnosed in older women.

Children are not in high risk groups for either of these illnesses. Hepatitis B vaccines are routinely given to infants at birth. HPV vaccine protocols target children ages nine to 26. These vaccine schedules make no sense from a health perspective, even with the large assumption that these vaccines are effective at preventing disease. These vaccine recommendations do make sense from a corporate profit model. Vaccinations are known to be highly profitable for pharmaceutical companies.

Vaccine safety record

As of mid-2012, there were 119 reports of death, 894 incidents of disability and 9,889 documented emergency room visits resulting from the HPV vaccine. As of March 2012, there were 66,554 reports of serious adverse reactions to the Hepatitis B vaccine including 1,500 deaths, many officially reported as SIDS.

HPV vaccine increases risk of cervical cancer in young women

Previously healthy, young women are reporting cervical abnormalities and cancer after receiving the HPV vaccine. In March 2012, 669 women reported abnormal pap smears and cervical dysplasia to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System. 50 women reported cancer as a result of the HPV vaccine. It is estimated that these reports are a very small percentage of the actual events. (
http://sanevax.org/hpv-vaccine-vaers-reports-march-2012/
)

Conclusions

Hepatitis B and HPV vaccines have not been proven safe or effective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases from infecting children. The targeted illnesses of liver disease and cervical cancer are not commonplace for infants, children and young adults. It is important that parents examine the facts prior to giving permission for these routine medical procedures. The real potential health risks need to be carefully weighed against the unproven protections against disease which these vaccines promise. Vaccine exemptions are available in every state. See (

HA= Hardy annual
HHA =Half hardy annual
P = Perennial
HB= Hardy biennial
HS= Hardy shrub

1

Cosmos (HHA) is an annual flower easily raised from seed. It’s also one of the very best for the bee. Grow it in groups, making the collection of pollen easier for the bees, who won’t have to fly as far to find their food. Cosmos grows 2-5ft tall, the majority reaching about 2ft. It’s from Mexico, so a half hardy annual. Plant out after all danger of frost has passed, and deadhead to keep them flowering continuously through the summer. These open, flat flowers will delight you as well as giving the bees a feast.

2

Aster (HHA) ‘Compostion’ or Michaelmass Daisies. Many modern hybrids have little or no pollen. easy to grow, colorful and late summer to autumn flowering, they provide food late in the season. Important if honeybees are to be well fed to get through the winter months.

3

Sunflowers (HA) are a great choice, available in many heights and colours to suit your garden space. Choose yellow or orange over red, which bees don’t like. Varieties exist now for the allergic gardener, containing no pollen. Obviously avoid these when wishing to attract bees.

4

Calendulas or marigolds (HA) are great for bees, especially the original single flowered pot marigold. Dead head regularly for a longer flowering period.

5

Primulas. (HP) The native primrose, (primula vulgaris), primulas of all kinds, even the drumstick ones are great early food for bees. Cowslips (primula veris) are also good members of this extensive family of perennial plants.

6

Rudbekia (HHA) are an extensive group of cone flowers from the aster family. A wide variety of heights, mostly available in yellows and oranges, sure to brighten your border and feed bees. There are also a few hardy perennial ones, of which ‘Goldsturn’ is my personal favourite. All are easy to grow from seed.

7

Scabious or cornflowers (HA), another aster family member, are mostly blue flowered and bees adore them. Dead-headed regularly, they’ll flower all summer long.

8

Lavender (HHS) There are plenty of lavenders to choose from, all needing plenty of sun and well drained soil, but they’ll reward you with plenty of fragrant flowers for cutting and drying. Just watch them get smothered in bees when they come into flower.

9

Bluebells (bulb) Another early food supply. Just a note of caution for UK growers. The native English bluebell in now under threat from the Spanish bluebell, which outcompetes and crosses with it. So please ensure you are planting the native bluebell to ensure you don’t endanger a bluebell woodland near you.

10

Hellebores (HP) The Christmas rose! A lovely flower to have in your garden from late winter to early spring, this plant will tolerate some shade and moist conditions, though not wet. When bees emerge from hibernation they need food fast. This one gives them a snack when there’s little else around.

11

Clematis (Perennial climber) The majority of clematis will provide pollen, and I’ve watched bees happily moving from flower to flower gathering their crop. Always plant clematis deeper than they were in the container, as this gives more protection against cleamits wilt. These plants are hungry and thirsty, so add good compost to the planting hole. They also like their roots in the cool and heads in the sun, so once planted I place either a thick mulch or a pile of stones or gravel around their roots, keeping them cool and conserving moisture.

12

Crocus (bulb) Early flowering, plenty to choose from, and planted in the autumn to flower year after year. These are great value and cheer me up as well as the bees!

13

Mint (HP), especially water mint, is loved by bees. It’s great in your cooking, too. Easy to grow, it can be a bit of a thug, so either grow it in a container or prevent its escape around the garden by burying a bucket (with holes in the bottom for drainage) and plant your mint into that.

14

Rosemary (HHS) A mediterranean herb, rosemary likes well drained soild and full sun. It flowers around April/May. A great culinary herb, bees will take advantage of the pollen as long as you prune it correctly. This is best done straight after flowering, as most of the flowers will appear on new wood. Don’t prune rosemary back to old, bare wood as these are not likely to regrow. Depending on where you live and soil conditions, rosemary can be short lived, so take some cuttings each year so you can replace the old plant should it dsie or become too leggy.

English: Honey Bee on Sedum Up until around a year ago the blooms of these flowers would be covered in honey bees. This year just one solitary bee is making its way round all the flower heads. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

15

Thyme (H to HHS)) There are now quite a few varieties available, tasting slightly different to each other eg lemon thyme. However, I’ve noticed that the wild thyme (thymus serpyllum) attracts a lot of bee visitors and tends to flower more profusely. But they are all worth growing. Give them the same growing conditions as rosemary and lavender.

16

Hebe (HH-HS) This extensive group of shrubs have wonderful flowers for bees. Plenty of pollen, all on one flower and plenty of flowers on one shrub. They vary in height, are mosly blue or pink and tolerate most soils. They dislike too much wet, so a well drained soil is best. Water well, though, until established.

17

Borage, the bee herb. (HA) Borage is blue flowered, simple to grow and in fact one type grows wild in the UK, though originally from Syria. Easy, prolific and the bees love it.

18

Echinacea, the cone flower. (HP) Now available in a variety of colours, all of which will attract bees. Echinacea Tennesseensis will attract birds, bees and butterflies.

19

Mignotette. There are HA, HHA and Perennial members of this family. They are sweetly scented and will attract and feed your bees, especially Reseda lutea.

20

Thrift, or Sea Pink (HP) is a great plant for a rock garden, trough or wall. Holding its bright pink flowers well above the grass-like foliage, it will cheer your garden and make the bees come back for more! Give it well drained condiitons and lots of sun.

21

Sedums are also excellent plants for rock gardens and walls. There are many to choose from, but avoid Sedum Spectabilis Autumn Joy if you’re planting for bees. Biting stonecrop and English stonecrop (sedums acre and anglicum). are natives, and great for bees.

22

Sweet Williams (Dianthus barbatus) (HB) are fantastic flowers for bees. An old cottage garden favourite, bees are attracted to the pink or white flowers and we love the perfume! They are members of the dianthus family, as are Pinks and Carna

By: Sarah Cain

Dr. Diane Harper was the lead researcher in the development of the human papilloma virus vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix. She is the latest to come forward and question the safety and effectiveness of these vaccines. She made the surprising announcement at the 4th International Public Conference on Vaccination, which took place in Reston, Virginia on Oct. 2nd through 4th, 2009. Her speech was supposed to promote the Gardasil and Cervarix vaccines, but she instead turned on her corporate bosses in a very public way. When questioned about the presentation, audience members remarked that they came away feeling that the vaccines should not be used.

“I came away from the talk with the perception that the risk of adverse side effects is so much greater than the risk of cervical cancer, I couldn’t help but question why we need the vaccine at all.”

– Joan Robinson

Dr. Harper explained in her presentation that the cervical cancer risk in the U.S. is already extremely low, and that vaccinations are unlikely to have any effect upon the rate of cervical cancer in the United States. In fact, 70% of all H.P.V. infections resolve themselves without treatment in a year, and the number rises to well over 90% in two years. Harper also mentioned the safety angle. All trials of the vaccines were done on children aged 15 and above, despite them currently being marketed for 9-year-olds.

So far, 15,037 girls have reported adverse side effects from Gardasil alone to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (V.A.E.R.S.), and this number only reflects parents who underwent the hurdles required for reporting adverse reactions. At the time of writing, 44 girls are officially known to have died from these vaccines. The reported side effects include Guillian Barré Syndrome (paralysis lasting for years, or permanently — sometimes eventually causing suffocation), lupus, seizures, blood clots, and brain inflammation. Parents are usually not made aware of these risks.

Dr. Harper, the vaccine developer, claimed that she was speaking out, so that she might finally be able to sleep at night.

“About eight in every ten women who have been sexually active will have H.P.V. at some stage of their life. Normally there are no symptoms, and in 98 per cent of cases it clears itself. But in those cases where it doesn’t, and isn’t treated, it can lead to pre-cancerous cells which may develop into cervical cancer.”

– Dr. Diane Harper

One must understand how the establishment’s word games are played to truly understand the meaning of the above quote, and one needs to understand its unique version of “science”. When they report that untreated cases “can” lead to something that “may” lead to cervical cancer, it really means that the relationship is merely a hypothetical conjecture that is profitable if people actually believe it. In other words, there is no demonstrated relationship between the condition being vaccinated for and the rare cancers that the vaccine might prevent, but it is marketed to do that nonetheless. In fact, there is no actual evidence that the vaccine can prevent any cancer.

From the manufacturers own admissions, the vaccine only works on 4 strains out of 40 for a specific venereal disease that dies on its own in a relatively short period, so the chance of it actually helping an individual is about about the same as the chance of him being struck by a meteorite. Why do nine-year-old girls need vaccinations for extremely rare and symptom-less venereal diseases that the immune system usually kills anyway?

When I was a little girl, I loved going to my Grandma Maxie’s house. There was always something yummy to eat, especially during the summer when her garden was brimming with strawberries, rhubarb, peaches, and all sorts of veggies. I used to pass by the giant (ancient) freezer on my way through the garage to the backyard and I would stop, open it, and gaze at the stacks and stacks of square freezer containers with green or yellow lids. Each had tape around it and was labeled with the contents. My favorite, no surprise, was her strawberry and raspberry freezer jam.

Now that I’m a mom, I enjoy taking my kids to local pick-your-own farms to pick fruits and vegetables. Along with the harvest from our garden and stops at roadside stands and farmers markets, we end up with a lot of summer fruit and vegetables that we want to preserve and enjoy throughout the year, not just during the summer. While I really enjoy canning now and again, I’ve really been channeling my grandmother the past few years and taken freezing food to a new level.

There’s a reason for that. I find that some things are quicker to preserve when freezing, like berries. And other produce is fresher tasting and the quality is a bit better when freezing instead of canning. Plus, confession: I just don’t like canned veggies all that much. So, freezing it is!

Remember last summer when we covered the basics of washing and storing produce? Consider this the companion to that post.

As with canning, freezing produce requires a little bit of planning and gathering the proper equipment. While canning relies on heat to kill microbes, which then also destroys some of the nutritional value, freezing delays the growth of bacteria and slows the work of enzymes, which keeps the food preserved. That’s not to say that frozen food isn’t as safe as canned food. It’s just a different way to do it.

A big plus for freezing produce is that it ends up tasting much fresher and contains more nutrients than canned produce.

But there is a draw back as well. The texture of thawed veggies and fruit can be undesirable. In the process of freezing, the water within the fruits and veggies turns to ice. As it does, it expands which causes cell walls to burst. This can equal mushy texture when thawed.

But there are steps you can take to ensure higher quality frozen fruits and veggies — similar to the ones you buy at the grocery store. And we’ll cover those below.

First let’s talk about the materials you’ll need to assemble before you start.

GATHER MATERIALS

Secret #1: Something great thing about freezing fruits and vegetables is that you don’t really need fancy equipment. Freezer bags come in handy for “dry pack” freezing that doesn’t involve using syrups or purees. Rigid plastic (and sometimes glass) containers and jars come in handy for liquid or semi-solid foods, sauces, jams, and other preserves.

I stocked up on both sorts of containers (including some pretty awesome jars for freezer jam) and plastic freezer bags at Target.

In addition to containers, I also recommend freezer paper, freezer tape, and heavy-duty foil. They come in handy for packaging certain foods and for long-term storage. Long term means longer than the typical 6-12 months. The longer you store the food in the freezer, the more the quality declines, but it is still perfectly fine to eat.

Another essential for me is a rimmed baking sheet. I use it to quickly freeze individual pieces of whole or sliced produce. More on that in a bit.

Again, I found all the materials I needed for this post — from bowls, to markers, to baking sheets — at Target.

PREPARE THE FOOD

You’ll want to wash all fruits and vegetables well, especially if you don’t plan on peeling them, and pat them dry with a paper towel or dishtowel. Some fruits and vegetables can be frozen whole, while others need to be peeled, pitted, and/or cut into smaller pieces. A bit of it is personal preference, but some produce definitely does better in the freezer when cut into smaller pieces.

Secret #2: Fruits and veggies that do exceptionally well frozen whole:
Berries (raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, currants, cranberries, etc.), bananas, chili peppers, beans, asparagus, tomatoes, and corn.

Secret #3: Produce that does well sliced or diced:
Bell peppers, avocado, mango, pineapple, melon, peas, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, stone fruits (peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries), apples (yes, you can freeze apples!), summer squash, and winter squash.

Cut broccoli and cauliflower into florets. Shell peas, trim the ends of green beans and asparagus. Dice or slice peeled carrots, squash, brussels sprouts, and large leaves of spinach, chard, and kale. Rhubarb should be trimmed of woody ends and diced.

Potatoes can be frozen, but benefit from being shredded. Think: hashbrowns. (Note: I personally don’t like freezing potatoes at home. The quality just isn’t as good.) Zucchini is another veggie with a high water content. It can be sliced or diced and frozen, but I prefer shredding it instead.

Corn and bananas are pretty versatile when it comes to freezing. Corn can be frozen whole or cut from the cob. It’s totally up to you! I think it’s one of the best veggies for freezing because the quality isn’t as affected by the cold temperatures.

Bananas can be frozen whole and unpeeled, or peeled and whole, or peeled and cut. They’re pretty fabulous that way! I can’t resist adding a frozen banana to my daily smoothie to sweeten it up without adding sugar.

After fruits and veggies have been peeled, sliced and diced, as needed, there are a few more preparation steps.

Secret #4: Most vegetables also need to be blanched before freezing. Blanching is nothing more than plunging vegetables into a pot of boiling water, letting them cook briefly (3-4 minutes max), and transferring them to a big bowl of ice water to stop the cooking.

Why is this important? Remember that mushiness I mentioned earlier? This will help with that, but it also helps maintain the color and nutrients, as well as killing any surface organisms that could lead to spoilage.

Corn (though you could), tomatoes, onions, potatoes (including sweet), and winter squash don’t need to be blanched. And neither do fruits.

Leafy greens don’t have to be cooked, but they can be. But one thing is for sure, quickly sauteing spinach, for instance, really saves on space! Pictured above is four ounces of spinach cooked and fresh.

Something I saw a few months ago (and a few of you lovely readers mentioned to me) that I think is brilliant, is making spinach ice cubes to add to smoothies. I usually just put the greens into my smoothie packs, but I finally tried this and I’m hooked! Simply add a whole bunch of leafy greens to a blender with enough water to make a smooth puree and freeze. Easy peasy!

I also like to roast some foods before I freeze them. I’ve done this with tomatillos, plums, tomatoes, and peppers. I will either puree them into a sauce or freeze them as is, juices and all.

Secret #5: In canning, foods are treated with citric acid, lemon juice, or ascorbic acid to help kill microorganisms and prevent discoloration. The same rings true with freezing. Think of all of your favorite fruits that turn brown after being cut — bananas, avocado, peaches and nectarines, apples, etc. They benefit from a quick dip into acidulated water.

Make a solution of 1/2 teaspoon ascorbic acid (found in the pharmacy or canning section of grocery stores) per 3 Tablespoons of water, or 1 Tablespoon fresh lemon juice in 4 cups (1 quart) water. Sprinkle or dip the fruit with the solution and let dry.

FREEZING

First up, Dry Pack freezing, where we start by talking about IQF, or Individually Quick Frozen. The idea behind this is simple: if a fruit/veggie is frozen in a single layer (whole or sliced), it will freeze more quickly. Secret #6: Freezing quickly is great because a) fruits and veggies are easy to thaw out if they aren’t frozen together in a big lump, and b) the quality is better after thawing.

All you do is place everything you want to freeze in a single layer on a lined baking sheet. Lined, so that what you’re freezing doesn’t stick to the pan.

The goal is to freeze the food as quickly as possible. Adjusting the temperature of the freezer ahead of time is a good idea. You want to ensure that it’s as cold as possible — at least 0 degrees F or lower. You also want to make sure there is plenty of air circulation for even freezing, so it’s better not to layer a bunch of bags or containers in the freezer at once. Doing it over the course of a day or a few days is a good idea.

Be sure to not open the freezer as the produce is freezing on the baking sheets. You really want them to freeze as quickly as possible without fluctuating temperatures. When the food is frozen, transfer to containers or bags and place the bags back in the freezer.

Removing air from containers and bags will help keep frozen food last that much longer and help prevent hoar frost from forming.

Secret #7: Another option is Wet Pack freezing, or freezing fruit in a sugar syrup. The recipe for the syrup is the same as you’d use when canning. All of the steps are the same as with canning, except no cooking needed. It’s so easy to do!

Of course I can’t talk about freezing produce without talking about freezer jam. In the winter months, it’s really wonderful to pull out a jar or container of freezer jam made from summer fruit. We really enjoy making jam at our house and it is another great way to enjoy frozen fruit.

I also freeze fruit and vegetable purees (including baby food when my kids were tiny), soups, sauces and other condiments, like fresh salsa.

LABELING & STORING

Secret #8: You’ll want to label the bags and containers with the date and the contents. You might think you’ll remember what it is, but six months down the road it might be more difficult to remember what was in each bag or container.

Freezer tape will stay on the containers despite the cold temperature and the moisture. I like to run tape around the containers too, to keep out air and prevent hoar frost. Wrapping bags and containers in foil and taping will also help with that.

I like to use resealable freezer bags a lot when I freeze produce. They’re easy and inexpensive. Secret #9: Both bags and containers should be packed full. Remove as much air as possible. A trick I learned is to use a straw to suck all of the air from the bag and then quickly close it.

For containers, removing air is a bit challenge without the help of a vacuum device. A vacuum sealer is definitely the way to go for long-term storage — both for bags and containers. It is worth the extra expense to purchase a device if you do a lot of freezing. Removing the extra air and sealing fruit and veggies individually in plastic packaging yields a lot better results than the freezer bags alone. (My grandma swears by it!)

Secret #10: When using containers, be sure to leave enough headspace to allow for the liquids to expand as it freezes.

STORAGE TIME & THAWING

Typically in a basic freezer, frozen fruits and veggies will last a very long time. As time passes, the food doesn’t become inedible, but the quality does deteriorate. If you plan on keeping frozen foods for a long time, a deep freeze might be a better bet as it has lower temperatures and is opened less often.

Secret #11: Fruit will keep well for a year, and veggies will keep for about 18 months. (I’ve had some keep for much, much longer.)

When thawing, know that fruits are better eaten when still a little frozen so they aren’t completely mushy. Or you can cook them into sauces, or add them to smoothies. Vegetables are best cooked straight from the freezer, no thawing.

Some vegetables suffer no ill effects from freezing — corn and peas, particularly. Others will be better in recipes where they will break down and be consumed in smaller pieces, like soups, stews and sauces. There’s nothing easier than pulling a bag of broccoli, carrots and cauliflower straight out of the freezer and toss them right into a Thai curry.

Well there we have it. Everything you need to know to get your summer harvest stocked away for the winter.

What about you? Does all this talk about freezing fruits and veggies take you right back to summers at your grandma’s house? Do you prefer canning? Any tips or secrets you’ve learned along the way? I’d love to know!

While there’s no clinical evidence that colloidal silver can be used to cure Parvovirus in dogs, there’s TONS of anecdotal evidence.

Indeed, people have been using colloidal silver on their “Parvo puppies” (and grown dogs with Parvo, as well) for many years, and usually to great success, as this video attests.

The key seems to be to keep the puppies well hydrated, because they don’t like to eat or drink when they have Parvovirus.

So Pedialyte for animals (available from the vet or pet store) or some other hydrating fluid is given orally throughout the day, using either an eyedropper (for puppies), or for larger dogs a large syringe, without the needle, of course.

Some people recommend pouring a capsule full of Lactobacillus acidophilus (beneficial digestive microorganism available at any health food store) into the Pedialyte before administering it to the dog, as the beneficial microbes will compete for space in the puppies tummy with the Parvovirus (i.e., called “competitive inhibition”) and also help prevent some of the diarrhea, as well as the damage to the stomach lining done by the virus.

Some people also recommend trying to feed the dogs with baby food (well strained chicken, for example) in order to get some nourishment into them. Others recommend a commercial product called Nutristat (available online), which is a gel-like paste containing nutrients, electrolytes, fats and protein to nourish the dog while eating is problematic due to the virus.

Finally, colloidal silver is also administered orally, multiple times throughout the day until the dog’s appetite returns and Parvo symptoms are gone.

See my video here on how to administer colloidal silver or other liquids, orally to dogs:

The hoverfly helps you manage pests

By Justin Gardener, REALfarmacy.com

The summer garden brings a bounty of vegetables. For some folks there is nothing tastier than a garden-fresh tomato and cucumber salad. As we enjoy the fruits of our labor, however, there may be little creatures in the garden enjoying their own feast on the precious crops.

Pests have been with us since the dawn of agriculture and always will be. They are products of the evolutionary arms race between plants and insects. Instead of futile attempts at eradication and dependence on various forms of poison, we can choose to manage pests so they do not significantly reduce the harvest.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a concept that uses scientific and common sense methods to prevent or reduce pest problems. Most problems can be prevented with sound farming practices such as crop rotation, soil enrichment, and encouraging beneficial insect populations. IPM also deals with bacteria and virus problems. As a last resort, pesticide applications can be used but should start with organic, non-toxic products like Neem oil.

Most IPM practices are the same whether for a home garden or a larger agricultural scale. Here is a good primer from Ohio State University.

“At the heart of IPM is the understanding that most crops can tolerate a certain amount of pest damage…”

There is no need to panic at the first sign of pest damage. Typically, healthy plants can lose up to 20% of their foliage with no effect on production. It’s actually better to let the pests do their thing for a little while because this attracts predatory insects and birds that will keep the pests in check.

Create a mini-ecosystem. A vital component of IPM is planting flowers, shrubs and trees to attract beneficial insects and songbirds. “Insectary plants” such as cilantro, dill, sweet alyssum, and marigold provide nectar for the adult forms of diminutive predators like parasitoid wasps and hoverflies. Plant native trees, shrubs, and perennials to provide food and habitat for honeybees, songbirds, and predatory insects like ground beetles and assassin bugs.

Rotating crops helps to prevent pest and disease organisms from becoming established in the soil. Enriching the soil with regular additions of organic matter keeps a living, thriving substrate going for your plants to grow healthy and resist pests.

The best we can do to manage pests is to become familiar with pests. Scout the garden, learn what is eating the leaves, watch for beneficial insects on the prowl. As always, knowledge is the best tool at your disposal. Find out specific ways of dealing with a pest. If damage continues unabated, use organic pesticides that are not harmful to beneficial insects and not toxic to your health.

There is much more to the subject of Integrated Pest Management. Its benefits are not limited to your garden and yourself. IPM is a way of improving the environment by reducing synthetic chemical use and providing wildlife habitat. It is a way of promoting self-sufficiency and sustainability.
Read more at

It’s tempting to dismiss it as luck: Some people might catch a slight cold or suffer an occasional ache or pain now and then, but they never seem to suffer from flus, fevers and illnesses that send the rest of us diving under the covers for days.

Despite centuries of scientific advances, doctors still can’t tell us definitively how to stay well. So why not look for solutions from the people for whom the common cold is, well, uncommon?

Here are 8 surprising habits of those people who never get sick — and how you can adapt them to your own soon-to-be healthier life.

1.

THEY STRESS LESS Researchers at Duke University found that stress damages the immune system and the heart. Other studies suggest that it increases your chances of contracting bacterial infections, such as tuberculosis. There’s also evidence that learning relaxation techniques early on is crucial: A 2009 Stress in America Survey by Harris Interactive on behalf of the American Psychological Association found that stress is a top health concern for kids between ninth and 12th grades, and suggested that stress could do serious long-term damage if those children don’t learn to manage it. Of course, exercise is one of the best ways to chill out. A University of Southern California study found that when participants took a vigorous walk around a track, they reduced tension in their bodies by 20 percent. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is also crucial, as is laughing: It releases endorphins in the body that act as natural stress busters. Plus, a good guffaw gives your heart muscle a workout.2.

THEY EAT LESS As far back as the 1930s, studies found that animals that were fed less lived twice as long. More recent research in humans has linked calorie restriction to lower incidences of age-related health problems, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Participants in one study who ate 25 percent less than their usual amounts had lower overall cholesterol, LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, triglyceride levels and blood pressure. Keep in mind that calorie restriction is an easy diet to do unsafely, however. Start by limiting simple sugars and flours, and pack your meals with dark leafy greens and other vegetables. You can find more tips on calorie restriction at crsociety.org or naturalhealthmag.com.3.

THEY OPT FOR HERBAL REMEDIES Although plant-based health aids have been long derided by the Western medical community, about onequarter of all prescription drugs are derived from plants. Herbal remedies (plants purported to have medicinal properties) are an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine, and what we know about plants’ abilities to heal is impressive: They can alleviate high blood pressure, stimulate the nervous system, destroy germs and boost the immune system. But you needn’t fill your medicine cabinet with supplements; something as simple as green tea can help improve your immunity and your health. Commercial green tea beverages have come under fire recently for unsubstantiated health claims, yet studies have shown that antioxidants in green tea called polyphenols have the potential to boost metabolism and burn fat, protect against liver disease, control blood sugar levels and lower LDL cholesterol. Skip pre-packaged bottled versions and sip unflavored loose-leaf green tea instead.4.

THEY MAKE FRIENDS A PRIORITY Studies show that people with strong friendships tend to have more robust immune systems and are less likely to succumb to infectious diseases. In 2008, Harvard University researchers found that positive social attachments might protect against memory loss and other cognitive disorders. A 1993 Swedish study of male blue-collar workers (who are at increased risk of heart disease, statistically) concluded that men with strong social support lowered their risk of cardiovascular disease; and a 2009 study in Buffalo, N.Y., found that those with few friends were most likely to suffer from heart disease, depression and anxiety. If you feel the need to boost your crony count, try this little experiment for one week: Strike up at least two conversations every day with someone you haven’t talked to before. And aim to listen more than you speak; the more airtime you give someone, the more generous he or she will be with personal details. Also, keep the bellyaching to a minimum. Your tone can determine how often others will want to spend time and talk with you.5.

THEY STAY Ph BALANCED According to some practitioners of alternative medicine, the body is healthiest when its systems are functioning midway between completely acidic and completely alkaline (i.e., pH balanced). When pH levels fall below that midpoint, the body suffers from a condition called acidosis, which even in minor cases can cause fatigue, rapid breathing, stomach problems and confusion. Many experts say that the typical American diet, chock-full of meat and sugar, has created an epidemic of acidosis in the Western world. Most vegetables are alkalizing, however, so eating them regularly can reduce your risk of being too acidic. Include lots of dark leafy greens, green beans, asparagus and carrots in your diet; other alkalizing foods to reach for include cucumbers, coconuts and avocados.6.

THEY EAT GARLIC Studies have shown that garlic can act as a powerful antioxidant and antibiotic, as well as cut the duration and the number of colds you catch. In addition, garlic has proved efficient in reducing blood pressure and triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Some experts say that garlic’s medicinal value lessens when it’s in a supplement form and recommend that you eat it fresh if you want to get garlic’s health benefits.7.

THEY DETOX REGULARLY Many chemicals used commonly today—such as phthalates, dioxins and PCBs—were absent from our environment a century ago. That might be why the rates of diseases (including cancer and liver disease) linked to toxic exposures are increasing, say experts. Although no long-term studies on the benefits of detoxification have been done, chances are good that your health will improve if you lower the level of synthetic chemicals present in your body. Digestive issues, fatigue, breakouts or muscle pain are often signs that you could benefit from a detox program, most of which require you to limit meats and avoid wheat, sugar, dairy, caffeine and alcohol. You can also purge toxins by sitting in a sauna or taking Bikram yoga classes, which are practiced in a hot room. Cleansing homeopathic or mineral baths might help, too. Talk to your doctor before embarking on a detox program of any length. If you’re pregnant or nursing, have an eating disorder or suffer from any kind of chronic health condition, it’s especially important to detox only under the supervision of a health care provider.8.

THEY TAKE MORE NAPS Sleep deprivation has the same biological effect as stress: Overtired bodies ratchet up production of the hormone cortisol, which gives you energy but restricts production of human growth hormone, limiting your body’s ability to repair itself. Just like stress, sleep loss has a degenerative effect on your health, and lack of sleep is also tied to compromised immune function. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, found that the number and effectiveness of immune cells decrease without enough sleep. A counterintuitive napping tip: Consider drinking a cup of coffee or other caffeinated beverage right before your nap. Because it will take about 20 minutes for the caffeine to travel through your digestive system, you can fit in a short snooze before it takes effect. Japanese researchers found that subjects who did this were more alert when they awoke than those who didn’t, and that their post-slumber work productivity was higher.Source: Natural Health Mag

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I know a man who had a dual-organ transplant (kidney/pancreas) about four years ago. He has to take anti-rejection drugs daily to keep his immune system from rejecting the transplanted organs. That’s because the human immune system views transplanted organs as “foreign bodies,” and targets them for attack.

So because of the anti-rejection drugs he has virtually no immune system, which means he is basically a walking target for just about any kind of opportunistic infection that comes along.

What’s more, because of the nature of the business he runs, he is in constant contact with the general public during the course of the day, and has very little choice but to be around people who are sick with colds, flu, sore throats, coughs, etc. This is a very dangerous situation for any transplant patient, because, generally speaking, their immune systems are so weak from the immune-suppressing anti-rejection drugs that even the slightest infection can become life-threatening.

However, my friend tells me that each morning he washes down his anti-rejection medication with an ounce or two of colloidal silver. And in the four years since his transplant, he has not had a single serious infection. He’s had a few minor colds and sniffles, but that’s about it. (You can hear all about it, in his own words, in the newly released Colloidal Silver Secrets video, available inexpensively in both DVD and VHS formats at
http://www.lifeandhealthresearchgroup.com
).

His lack of serious infections is, of course, very unusual given his circumstances. Normally, it is quite common for transplant patients on immune-suppressing anti-rejection drugs to be afflicted with a number of infections every year, any of which can become quite serious. In fact, many transplant patients become so afraid of catching an infection, they carry doctor’s face masks with them wherever they go, in case they end up in the presence of someone who is coughing and choking with some kind of infection. Other transplant patients simply won’t go out in public very much during certain times of the year when colds and flu are prevalent. But my friend doesn’t let fear of infection stop him. He does what he has to do to run his business and make a living. And he depends on colloidal silver to keep him relatively infection-free all year long.

It makes me wonder if colloidal silver would help with other immune-compromised individuals as well. For the past 14 years, I’ve personally used small amounts of colloidal silver daily in order to keep chronic fatigue syndrome at bay. And I’ve heard from a number of colloidal silver users who are afflicted with more serious conditions, such as AIDS, that while it has done very little to lower their HIV count, it does seem to help prevent opportunistic secondary bacterial and fungal infections from taking hold. It is these secondary opportunistic bacterial and fungal infections that kill many AIDS patients each year.

Of course, there are no medical studies to demonstrate that colloidal silver can protect immune-compromised individuals. Just anecdotal information such as the examples above. But it is interesting to ponder, and you have to wonder why the medical authorities don’t look more closely at colloidal silver as a possible solution to at least some of the very serious problems encountered by immune-compromised patients.
